Quest is an ATKINS CLIONE. 34' on deck, and 49.9 overall, she carries an 11' beam, her draft, at a mere 6'(compared to 8'+ on a square rigger) She could attack swiftly, and evade capture over the millions of shoals in the Caribbean, leaving the lumbering monsters abaft. she is a gaff rigged stays'l ketch, very similar in size ,and performance to a true pirate sloop.Contrary to popular belief, pirate ships WERE NOT the large ,cumbersome square riggers that hauled standard cargo. A square rigged ship was slow and hard to handle in close quarters.the smaller(30'-60'), faster pirate sloops could sail circles around a square rigger, avoiding it's much larger cannons, while attacking with 4-6 smaller cannons and usually disabling the larger vessel for boarding, pillaging, and left aflame... Occasionally a pirate capt. would commandeer a larger vessel,as his home, and a floating tactical station, just out of range of the battles.quest's design is from the late 1700's, and was built in 1929,as a pirate "hobby"weekend toy for a millionaire.but, a few years later, was sold off at the beginning of the great depression.she was in deplorable condition upon her purchase in 2007, but has been fully restored,as a working pirate ship. she has 4 carronades, that weigh 100lbs(barrel weight),and fire a 2 ounce powder charge, shaking the boat ,and crew, when fired! we also have an assortment of black powder guns for use in our battles.
So, step aboard, and let the battle begin! YO HO, ME HEARTIES!
